Got rid if the Sony Garbage with the help of Linux

August 29, 2009

Earlier I wrote about the problem I was having with getting rid of the VAIO Care bloat Sony packed in with the Visa software. I tried the uninstall, then the turning off through services, just like you read in the blogs, but that didn’t stop it from trying to log on to the internet – which would even duplicate files if was using my FTP.

Then I called Sony support and had an Asian kid who had a party going on in the background try to do the same thing remotely. He gave service record number and said call back during business hours and talk to a second level guy. What a bunch of crap all that was.

Funny thing about Microsoft, is that it not only hides program folders, but if you do find the VAIO Care file in the Sony directory within the Programs directory. Vista won’t let you delete it.

So I started deleting the files with the VAIO Care folder, one at a time since I could reinstall them from the Recycle Bin if I had to. But after a few deletions, I still had the same problems, so I started deleting every one I could without windows telling me to try again.

(Funny thing, as I was doing this, a HP marketing guy was in the coffee shop at the time and he mentioned just what happened. He said, “You will find out there will be a couple .dll files left that you can’t delete.”)

So true, there was two .dll files and one exe file, left behind that Microsoft and Sony wasn’t about to let me delete.
Then what really made me even more piss off was the the damn VAIO Care was still able to try to log on and giving me the box full of code and screwing things up.

Well thanks to the fact that Linux operating systems leave a back door to the partition set aside for the Mircosoft operating system. I just rebooted into Linux and went through the back door, went right to the VAIO Care and killed that sucker. Asta la veetsa baby. End of story.

I tried deleting the VAIO Care file and couldn’t just like you said, but I was able to move the files to where ever I wanted on my computer. I figured if it was moved the computer wouldn’t be able to start it and I was right. What was also interesting is that after I had restarted my computer I was able to delete the VAIO Care files that I had moved and couldn’t delete earlier. It’s worked so far, but I have a feeling there is still some crap from Sony floating around my computer some where. . .

I guess you could call that up-rooting it.
From what I gather from other sources on the web, Sony says that they will remove your bloat if you ask them to. If I had the time during their so called business hours I might give it a try, but I’ve kinna already have taken that route once and that sure was a waist of my time. I’ll probably wait until Window 7 goes on sale and then do a clean install and over write the bloat; if that’s possible.
